Qatar Energy Corporation (QE) has selected energy giant Shell for a 6.25% stake in its North Field East (NFE) liquefied natural gas (LNG) project, the largest of its kind in the world.

The $28 billion (£23.3 billion) project could produce 32 million tonnes of LNG a year, expanding Qatar's capacity from 77 million tonnes a year (Mtpa) to 110 million tonnes by 2025.

Total Energy, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips and Eni have all joined large LNG projects in recent months, with Shell investing in NFE closely behind.

Located in Ras Laffan in northeastern Qatar, NFE involves the construction of four LNG megatrains, each with a capacity of about 7.8 million tonnes/year.

With a total of 80 development wells and eight unmanned wellhead platforms, the project is expected to produce the first gas by the end of 2025.

The second phase of the Northern Gas Field Expansion, the Northern Gas Field South Project, aims to increase Qatar's LNG production capacity from 1.1 million tonnes/year to 1.26 million tonnes/year by 2027.
